Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion tools and resources

Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion includes a package of tools and resources to support New Zealanders’ collective social cohesion efforts. These tools and resources were developed based on feedback and input from communities and other key stakeholders.

Everyone can make a contribution to social cohesion. This package of tools and resources can be used by government, individuals, communities, NGOs and other private sector organisations to strengthen social cohesion through their own mahi.

The Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion strategic framework supports New Zealanders’ collective social cohesion efforts. It includes actions and outcomes we can work on to achieve a central vision of social cohesion in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion Policy Guide

Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion Policy Guide helps policy analysts apply Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion Strategic Framework to their policy work, particularly when developing policy advice or reviewing policy settings.

It provides key questions and prompts across the policy development process to help policy analysts determine the impacts of their policy work on social cohesion and to maximise the potential to strengthen social cohesion through it.

The Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion package of tools and resources includes helpful information sheets for individuals, communities, businesses, local government and the cultural sector. They provide some practical tips and information for strengthening Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion for each sector.

These information sheets were developed with input and feedback from communities and key stakeholders. The information in these sheets may develop further as Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion mahi continues.

The Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion community fund is a $2 million fund to support community-based initiatives that strengthen social cohesion.

Developing the Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion strategic framework involved speaking to diverse communities across Aotearoa New Zealand. We heard about experiences of discrimination or being treated differently based on, gender, faith, sexuality, geographic location and other differences. Communities we spoke to wanted differences in identity and culture to be valued, respected and celebrated. This document summarises what we heard from communities about social cohesion in Aotearoa New Zealand.

As part of developing the Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion strategic framework, a report was commissioned to establish a baseline of what social cohesion in Aotearoa New Zealand currently looks like. This baseline report provides a starting point for measuring Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion over time.

Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion measurement framework

A Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion measurement framework has been developed as part of the Te Korowai Whetū Social Cohesion strategic framework. The measurement framework helps us to understand and measure social cohesion in Aotearoa New Zealand through multiple data sources. This includes current data sources and surveys collected between 2016 and 2021.
