FAQs and other information

Why is the government continuing to fund these programmes?

  • Reducing child material hardship is one of the Government’s three priorities in the Child and Youth Strategy 2024-2027. These programmes help mitigate the impacts of child material hardship and contribute to the Government’s child poverty reduction targets.
  • Addressing cost of living pressures faced by low to medium income families is a key lever for reducing child poverty.
  • Providing breakfasts and warm, waterproof rain jackets will help mitigate the impacts of material hardship which create barriers to school attendance and achievement and contribute to poor health and economic outcomes.

What will the funding buy?

  • In partnership with Fonterra and Sanitarium, funding for the KickStart Breakfast programme will provide more than 42,000 daily free breakfasts in over 1,400 schools for a further year. The funding ensures continuity while the Ministry of Education develops its longer-term approach to the provision of food in schools.
  • Funding for KidsCan will provide 17,500 warm, waterproof jackets per year in schools that have high concentrations of socio-economic disadvantage for two more years.
