Supporting the Children’s Commissioner through a period of change - Budget 2022

We’re supporting the Office of the Children’s Commissioner with extra funding as it begins its transition to the Children and Young People’s Commission.

Government is investing $1.64 million to enable the Office of the Children’s Commissioner to meet its existing statutory obligations and operate effectively as it faces a new structure and responsibilities.

The funding addresses existing critical cost pressures faced by the Children’s Commissioner and extra costs associated with transitioning into the Children and Young People’s Commission this year.

  • Critical cost pressures include a significant increase in the number of sites the Children’s Commissioner is required to monitor under the United Nations Convention against Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT), including:
    • 11 additional youth remand homes
    • five child and youth mental health, disability and youth forensic units
    • three Mothers with Babies units in prisons.
  • The funding is also to ensure the Children's Commissioner has adequate resourcing to continue to operate effectively as it progresses through significant changes to its structure and functions over the next 12 months.
