Delivering employment training for Māori – Budget 2022

Supporting Māori employment opportunities through the Māori Trades and Training Fund.

Government is investing $66.202 million over four years for by-Māori-for-Māori employment-based training programmes.

This initiative enables Māori training and employment providers to design and deliver Kaupapa Māori training programmes to support sustainable and paid employment outcomes for Māori.

  • The Māori Trades and Training Fund (MTTF) is a contestable, grant-based fund that supports Māori entities to design and deliver unique employment-focussed training programmes, tailored for Māori in their communities with extensive wraparound support.
  • MTTF funding supports Māori entities to design and deliver their programmes, and also covers the costs of training, and other support to help Māori overcome barriers to participating in training and employment.
  • The additional funding will enable the continued delivery of programmes with existing MTTF providers and will support applications from and develop the capability of new providers. It supports employment placements and evaluation (including a Kaupapa Māori evaluation) of the first two years of the programme.

This is a proven programme that has in the last two years funded 17 Māori training and employment providers to design and deliver employment-focussed training programmes for 813 people with 254 participating in training.

  • So far, the MTTF has approved 17 Māori training and employment providers (with more partnerships in the works) to design and deliver Kaupapa Māori training programmes with sustainable (and paid) employment outcomes for participants.
  • A total of 813 participants are expected to be supported under current contracts through training with a Te Ao Māori focus and into sustainable employment.
  • During its first two years, the Māori Trades and Training Fund was significantly oversubscribed with high demand from Māori entities willing to partner with government to deliver employment-focussed training programmes in their communities.
