Government announcement on improved redress for abuse in care survivors
09 May 2025.
The Government has today announced a $774 million investment in the care system and improved redress for survivors of abuse in care as part of Budget 2025.
The package includes a 50 per cent increase in the average payment for survivors of abuse in state care, and top-up payments for those who have previously received payment for such abuse. Redress payments for survivors will be increased from an average of $19,180 to $30,000.
Announced by Lead Minister, Erica Stanford, the investment forms part of the Crown’s response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care and includes a suite of changes to the existing redress processes currently handled by the Ministry of Social Development, Oranga Tamariki, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health.
As one of the key agencies supporting the Crown’s response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry, we will be working closely with the Crown Response Office and other redress agencies towards implementation over the next four years.
