Public consultation on the Working for Families scheme launched

The Government has launched public consultation on proposals to improve the Working for Families scheme. The objective is to increase certainty for families about their Working for Families payments and help families avoid getting into Working for Families debt.
Submissions are open now and close on 3 July 2025.
The main proposal is to calculate entitlements using a shorter period of time and to use past income for this calculation. This would remove the need for families to estimate their income for the year ahead, making payments more accurate and helping to prevent debt. Other proposals aim to simplify the rules to make it easier for families to understand their obligations and entitlements.
The discussion document also seeks feedback on some aspects of families’ experiences as they move between a benefit and work.
