Youth Service

Youth Service, the first part of the Government’s Welfare Reform programme, started on 20 August 2012.

The goal of Youth Service is to help young people find the best option for education, training or work-based learning that will help them build their skills and find a job.

Youth Service providers

The Ministry of Social Development selects Youth Service providers to work with young people and deliver the Youth Service.

These providers cover the majority of New Zealand. In two areas, Whanganui and Rangitikei, Work and Income provides Youth Service in-house using specialist case managers. In Wellington City Work and Income work jointly with a local provider. The in-house service enables the Government to assess the effectiveness of contracting out this type of service.
