Living Alone Payment

Living Alone Payment is a payment which helps people getting New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran’s Pension who live alone. It helps them with the extra costs of running a household on their own.


Who can get it

You may get the Living Alone Payment if you are:

  • getting NZ Superannuation or Veteran’s Pension
  • single
  • living alone (not in an institution or paying private board)

You may also get it if you are married, in a civil union or de facto relationship, but living apart and considered single.

Contact us to talk about your circumstances and we'll explain how to apply. We'll normally arrange a meeting with you and tell you what you need to bring.


How long do you have to complete your application

You have 20 working days from when you first contacted us. You'll need to provide us with any supporting documentation required for your application within this time. If you don't do this, you may have to reapply.

If you can't complete your application within 20 working days for any reason, contact us.
