Volunteer Opportunities

About volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to enhance a sense of contribution and belonging.  Volunteers meet new people and have fun while strengthening their communities.

One of the best aspects of volunteering is that you can choose an activity to complement your personal interests.  A few of your volunteer options involve:

  • sports
  • recreation
  • arts, culture and heritage
  • emergency services
  • social services
  • health
  • education
  • conservation and the environment

If you choose to volunteer, you will take a vital part in developing and maintaining sustainable and participatory communities.

Volunteer Community Co-ordinators programme

The Volunteer Community Co-ordinators (VCC) programme is a network of approximately 50 volunteers, nominated by a local incorporated society or charitable trust with an emphasis on helping older people, to work with the Office for Senior Citizens.

Through the VCC programme, these volunteers (usually older people) contribute to policy and service development at central and local government level.

A volunteer's personal knowledge of their community is an important aspect of the programme, as each VCC is located in a different part of New Zealand.  The volunteers have access to a wide range of local networks, including people from different cultures and backgrounds, rural and urban areas, community organisations and local government.

SAGES

SAGES is a volunteer programme for older people who wish to become life skills mentors.

If you choose to join SAGES, you will be trained as a home and life skills mentor for families and individuals in your community.  Volunteers will instruct people in a variety of areas including:

  • home management
  • cooking
  • budgeting
  • parenting

SAGES is delivered by non-government organisations who recruit and train mentors, and then match them with those in their community.
Families and individuals can self-refer by contacting SAGES providers in their area.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact one of the SAGES providers directly.

To locate the SAGES provider nearest you visit the Family and Community Services website.
