Sustainable Development for New Zealand - Programme of Action

The Programme of Action is the Government's approach to Sustainable Development in New Zealand. Achieving Sustainable Development requires:

  • looking after people
  • taking the long-term view
  • taking account of the social, economic, environmental and cultural effects of our decisions
  • encouraging participation and partnerships.

This reinforces the goals of the Social Development Approach.

The Ministry of Social Development has worked with other government departments, as the social sector representative, to develop the Programme of Action. The Ministry was particularly involved with the development of the two action areas: Child and Youth Development, and Sustainable Cities.
