Northcote Child and Youth Development Project

The Northcote Child and Youth Development Project is a collaborative project to support children and young people in the Northcote community. The project’s aim is to improve social, economic, environmental and cultural outcomes for children and young people by improving services and support with a focus on:

  • Learning what works best at community level
  • Looking at the needs of children at different stages of development
  • Using research and best practice to inform future decisions
  • Increasing the participation of children and young people in decisions that affect them.

North Shore City Council, the Ministry of Social Development and Housing New Zealand Corporation's Community Renewal Project are working together in partnership with the Northcote community, children, young people and their families and a wide range of government and community agencies on this project.

The Northcote Child and Youth Development Project is part of the Auckland Sustainable Cities Programme.

Family and Community Services (MSD) is also facilitating a number of similar community profile and planning exercises throughout the country as part of Local Services Mapping.

Statistical Profile

The Statistical Profile provides a snapshot of what is happening to children, young people and their families in Northcote and the environment in which children and young people in Northcote are being raised. It was used as a starting point for project development and discussions.

The profile contains a collection of statistics and commentary from key informants to provide local context. The profile can be used as a tool for planning and delivering future services in the Northcote community to support children and young people within the context of their families.

This report contains a collection of statistics compiled to show the environment in which children and young people are being raised in Northcote. Its role is to generally inform and highlight issues and is intended as a starting point for discussions.

A Literature Review: Effective Youth Development Practice, Sustainable & Collaborative Approaches & Participatory Action Research Methods.

This review explores literature around the importance of neighbourhood environments as key factors for positive youth development and well-being; the importance of intersector collaboration; and the use of Participatory Action Research (PAR) to help facilitate authentic engagement with children and young people. This review will aid anyone involved with youth development, consultation or services.

Methodology and Learning Report

This report outlines the methodology for producing the Statistical Profile of Northcote and the Northcote Database of organisations and agencies providing services to children, young people and their families in the Northcote area.

The report clarifies the process to enable better planning and implementation of similar profiling projects in other communities.

The report is divided into two main sections and covers the Northcote Statistical Profile and the Northcote database. Within each section, the methodology is described, successes and pitfalls are identified and recommendations are made to assist those undertaking future projects.

A Formative Evaluation of the Northcote Child and Youth Development Project - Quarterly Progress Report Two

This is the second progress report of the formative evaluation for the Northcote Child and Youth Development project. The report covers feedback from the first round of key informant interviews regarding the Northcote Child and Youth Development project and outlines key learnings to date (October 2005).

The Formative Evaluation Report and the Methodology and Learning Report will assist those involved with youth, community and interagency collaboration projects.

Indicator List

The Indicator List records where local statistical information can be sourced and is useful for community planning and reports. The Indicator List will help communities collect and compile good quality information about their community.

The indicators have been carefully selected to provide a cross section of social, environmental and economic indicators of community wellbeing. They can be added to by communities to capture local trends and issues.

The Indicator List is regularly updated as contact details for organisations change and more or better information comes on line.

A Guide to Developing a Community Profile is being developed along side the Indicator List to assist communities to present the information accurately in the way they decide would be most useful. In the meantime, however, community groups can read the Northcote Statistical Profile as an example of how the information can be presented.
