The Family Violence Ministerial Group
On Tuesday 25 August 2009, Hon Tariana Turia, then the Associate Minister for Social Development and Employment, who has responsibility for the Government's response to addressing and reducing the impact of Family Violence, announced the establishment of the Family Violence Ministerial Group. This group replaces the previous Family Violence Ministerial Team.
The Ministerial Group, which meets quarterly, will:
- provide oversight to a whole-of-government approach to preventing violence within families
- ensure legislation, policy and services to prevent and respond to family violence are aligned and co-ordinated
- provide a forum for Ministers to consult other Ministers on family violence work proposed or underway in their portfolios, and keep each other informed of developments
- guide the work of the Taskforce for Action on Violence within Families and identify priority areas of work.
Membership of the Ministerial Group includes the following Ministers:
Associate Minister for Social Development (Chair)
Minister of Justice
Associate Minister of Health
Minister of Police
Minister of Education
Minister of Pacific Island Affairs
Minister for Social Development
Minister of Housing
Minister of Women's Affairs
Minister of Ethnic Affairs
Associate Minister for Disability Issues
Minister of Māori Affairs.
Other Ministers may be invited to attend meetings from time to time if discussion is relevant to their portfolio, and membership may be amended to reflect future changes in priorities.
