The Taskforce

The Taskforce

The Taskforce for Action on Violence within Families is a significant commitment by the government and non-government sectors, independent Crown entities and the judiciary to work together and provide leadership to end family violence and promote stable, healthy families.

The Taskforce was established in June 2005 to advise the Family Violence Ministerial Team on how to make improvements to the way family violence is addressed, and how to eliminate family violence in New Zealand.

It is the first time decision-makers from the government and non-government sectors, the judiciary and Crown agencies have come together to tackle the problem of family violence.

Members of the Taskforce are

  • the Principal Family Court Judge
  • the Children’s Commissioner

  • the Deputy Chief Executive, Social Services Policy, Ministry of Social Development
  • a representative from the Taskforce’s Māori Reference Group
  • a representative from the Taskforce’s Pacific Advisory Group
  • the Chief Executive of CCS Disability Action
  • the Chief Executive, Strategic Relationships, Jigsaw
  • the Chief Executive of the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges
  • the Chief Executive of Relationship Services
  • the Chief Executive of the Tamaki Community Development Trust.

Māori Reference Group

A Māori Reference Group has been established to provide strategic advice to the Taskforce, Family and Community Services and the Ministry of Social Development more broadly, on implementing policies, services and initiatives that impact on Māori in New Zealand.

Functions of the Māori Reference Group include:

  • to ensure the Taskforce Programme of Action is culturally relevant and effective through robust processes of inclusive interaction of Māori
  • to contribute to reviewing progress and identifying what works
  • to inform the monitoring, review and evaluation process and related strategies
  • to accurately represent the interests of Māori constituent groups
  • to ensure cohesive leadership as a reference group of Māori leaders engaging with Government.

The Māori Reference Group seeks to provide a transformative process that gives movement to iwi, hapu and community aspirations towards Whanau Ora. The Group is committed to support and advocate the many strategies that exist within whanau, hapu, iwi and communities throughout Aotearoa.

Pacific Advisory Group

A Pacific Advisory Group has been established to provide strategic advice to the Taskforce and the Ministry of Social Development, on developing and implementing policies, services and initiatives that impact on Pacific peoples in New Zealand. There are three sub-committees of the Pacific Advisory Group, advising the Taskforce on its four broad areas of activity.

Group members are Pacific community leaders who, between them, contribute a diverse range of skills, knowledge and experience.
