Action details

Develop and implement a specific plan of action for preventing violence in Maori communities, based on consultation with whanau, hapu and iwi.

Link to goals and objectives

Goal 4. Objectives 4(1)(i), 4(1)(iii).

Timeframe

Initiatives such as the Report on Whanau Violence and the Family Violence Strategic Agenda for Iwi/Maori are almost completed and are likely to contribute significantly to meeting this action. Consequently this action has already started and the plan of action should be developed by the end of June 2003. The timeframe for implementation will be determined once the plan of action has been completed.

Rationale

There is currently no formal strategy for preventing violence in Maori communities that has been endorsed by whanau, hapu and iwi. Strategies for preventing violence within Maori communities are more likely to be effective if they are designed and owned by whanau, hapu and iwi.

Preliminary targets

To produce a plan of action for preventing violence within Maori communities, based on the outcomes of consultation with whanau, hapu and iwi, by June 2003.

Preliminary measures
  • Consultation with whanau, hapu and iwi has been undertaken and the outcomes of the consultation reflected in the plan.
  • Issues and gaps and initiatives to address them are clearly identified and justified.
