Northland Regional Plan 2010 - 2012
This plan outlines the priorities for our region and what we are doing to achieve them. Our focus is on helping individuals and families in our communities achieve better outcomes.
The priorities for 2010 - 2012 are:
- more people get into work and stay in work
- more children are safe
- more young people stay on track
- reduced reoffending by young people
- improved quality of life for older people
- communities are better able to support themselves.
This plan highlights both national and regional initiatives that aim to improve the lives of the people in our region and across New Zealand.
About the Northland region

With thousands of kilometres of beautiful coastline and a rich history, Northland is a unique part of New Zealand. Northland is known as the birth place of a nation. The country’s first capital was located in Russell, and the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands.
Our population
Almost a third of our population are Māori. We also have more children and older people than the national average. Many of our rural communities are small and remote.
Our economy
Northland has a workforce of 52,000 employees working for more than 17,000 businesses. The gross regional product of $3.4 billion annually represents about three per cent of the national total.
Our close proximity to Auckland provides our region with opportunities to attract industry and people looking for a balanced lifestyle.
Our events
The region’s largest city Whangarei will host two Rugby World Cup games in 2011. The Ministry is working with other organisations in the area to make the most of the opportunities the Rugby World Cup will provide.

Leading up to the Rugby World Cup, Georgia and Aroha will assist the Northland Regional Co-ordinator in the day to day activities including promotion work around Northland’s “paint it red” theme, roadshows and assisting at the Kaiwaka information centre.
