Highlights of 2007/2008

In partnership with government agencies, individuals and organisations, a variety of initiatives and programmes have been developed to address the East Coast’s important social issues. Highlights of work include:

- More East Coast people gained horticulture skills training and long-term employment
- The appointment of two youth justice teams
- Helping with the revitalisation of the community of Maraenui in Napier
- An early intervention programme for young parents
- People in some of the region’s more isolated areas being given access to training and employment
- Continued services of Heartland Service Centres in Ruatoria, Waipukurau and Wairoa.

- helping more people into paid work
- improving our local labour market
- supporting positive choice
- improving the independence of older people
- expanding SuperGold Card benefits.
Support families and whānau to be safe and resilient
Key programmes and initiatives include:
- building support for families experiencing family violence
- identifying families with multiple and complex needs
- bringing families and support agencies together
- improving agency and community responses
- helping parents to provide for their families
- providing information on support.
Strengthen communities
Key programmes and initiatives include:
- strengthening community providers
- building a responsive, co-ordinated approach
- getting the most our of funding
- improving local-level planning
- supporting community development
- connecting isolated communities
- bringing services together in one place.
