Payroll Giving

12 April 2010.

Payroll Giving is a new way for people to make donations to the organisations that mean the most to them.

Payroll Giving is now available at MSD

Payroll Giving will dramatically change the way that people make donations. It will also change the way donee organisations (charities, sports clubs, churches, schools, etc.) receive their income.

In the past, donors had to save receipts and then submit them at the end of the year to obtain a tax refund. This system is cumbersome and often refunds are not claimed. Payroll giving will be more convenient for donors. They will simply choose the organisation that they want to give to off a list of verified donee organisations. We will then transfer the donations through to their chosen organisations, and donors will get their tax credit straight away.

For charities being registered for Payroll Giving, this could help you smooth funding throughout the year and reduce the costs of fundraising. Our aim is to grow the number of employers offering Payroll Giving across the wider State sector and also across private sector employers.

Our scheme

Ministry staff will be able to choose from a list of registered donee organisations that have been verified by the Ministry.

We’ve started the scheme by providing staff with approximately 1,500 charities to choose from. The list will grow over time, particularly where there is demand from staff.

How to be involved

If organisations would like to be involved in our scheme, they’ll need to be registered as a donee organisation with Inland Revenue, and will need to provide the Ministry with a set of information which will allow us to set up systems to transfer donations.

If you’re registered as a donee organisation through Inland Revenue and would like to register for inclusion with the Ministry’s Payroll Giving scheme, please email Payroll Giving:
