Tātai Kōrero DVD celebrates Māori parents
21 July 2008.
A new DVD celebrating positive Māori parenting experiences was launched today as part of the Ministry of Social Development’s Māori Language Week Celebrations.
The DVD Tātai Kōrero features interviews with a selected group of Māori parents in both te reo Māori and English and gives their perspectives on how whakapapa, whānau, waiata, and mirimiri support them and their children’s learning and development.
It will be used as a training resource tool as part of the Parents as First Teachers (PAFT) and Family Start in-home visiting programmes and joins a range of free positive parenting resources that SKIP provides to parents and caregivers of children from birth to five years.
“This DVD is aimed at inspiring and motivating Māori parents and whānau to interact with their children in a positive way that celebrates their identity and strengthens their connection to their whānau, hapu and iwi,” says Gael Surgenor, Head of SKIP.
“It provides a Māori perspective to follow on from the successful ‘Good Morning’ clips that were released on our Parenting for Early Learning DVD last year,” she says.
SKIP provides parents with practical advice on how to teach children to be independent, and socially responsible.
SKIP has been running since 2004 and has supported thousands of families through its more than 200 community funded projects and various national partnerships.

SKIP
SKIP is a community based programme run by MSD's Family and Community Services to help parents build their skills in raising their children in a positive, loving way, using limits and boundaries rather than physical discipline.
The programme offers resources for parents and caregivers of children from birth to five years wanting advice and information. Through the SKIP Local Intiative Fund (LIF) we also provide money for positive parenting activities and projects developed and run by community groups and organisations. We also work in partnership with national non-government organisations to help them better support parents practising positive parenting.
