Budget fact sheets 2008 - historical claims

The Government is investing $12.1 million over the next two years to respond to historical child welfare claims.

The Ministry of Social Development recognises that these are important issues which need to be resolved. Proactive management ensures the Ministry can identify those claims that are capable of settlement at an early stage.

The Ministry established the Historical Claims team separate from Child, Youth and Family to examine each claim and the past care system.

This approach is already having an effect. Claimants and potential claimants are increasingly willing to come to the Ministry directly to try and resolve their concerns without the need for court proceedings.
