Budget fact sheets 2007 - whānau violence prevention
The Government is investing $2 million over the next year in the training and support of people working to prevent family violence in Māori whānau and communities.
Through Project Mauri Ora, a unique whanau orientated family violence prevention framework has been developed aimed at promoting zero tolerance of whānau violence. The framework, which aims to build the capability of Māori practitioners and service providers to provide culturally appropriate interventions to victims, perpetrators and their whānau, and to champion the message that violence is unacceptable in Māori communities, has attracted widespread praise from Māoridom.
The funding will:
- provide training in application of the framework to social service and family violence intervention practitioners
- deliver funding and support for trained practitioners, including assisting practitioners to meet annual certifications, licensing and supervision requirements
- support the development and distribution of resources
- support the operation of a Māori reference group established to advise the Taskforce for Action on Violence within Families.
