Budget fact sheets 2005 - Department of Internal Affairs enhanced audit capacity

The Government is investing $1.4 million over the next four years to increase the Department of Internal Affairs’ (DIA) ability to audit grants it makes to community organisations.

Each year, 3,500 grants are administered by DIA on behalf of the Crown.

Currently, the Department provides ongoing monitoring of these grants. With this new funding, a random audit programme will be introduced.

The audit programme will enable the Department to provide assurance that the grant funds are accounted for and spent appropriately for approved purposes.

The additional funding will allow the Department to establish three audit positions and conduct nationwide audit visits.

It will also enable the Department to contract external investigation and prosecution expertise if required.
